Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

After having established itself as an undisputable leader in the small car segment, Maruti Suzuki has set foot in the SUV market with the launch of Grand Vitara. The new Grand Vitara from Suzuki has been given a facelift and an extra thrust of power, within months of its launch. This SUV comes to India with a single petrol engine option, a 5-seater configuration, and an enthralling exterior design that resembles the Honda CR-V.

The gutsy 2.0L VIS Inline-4 petrol engine churns out 119.5 bhp and is linked to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. An all-wheel-drive configuration is standard and the estimated fuel economy is 7/9 km/l (city/highway).

Senator Obama, Offshoring, and H1B Visas?.

The 2008 Democratic National Convention (DNC) is history and the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC) is finally underway, the RNC being delayed a bit thanks to Hurrican Gustav.

As I watch the RNC, I wait with bated breath (really!) to hear Senator McCain and how he will reduce outsourcing and turn around the US economy.

But we heard what Senator Obama had to say at the DNC about outsourcing.  He said “he will stop giving tax breaks to companies that are sending jobs offshore and instead give them to companies who create jobs in America”.

(Various online newspapers reported responses from CEO’s of Indian companies who have made millions from outsourced US jobs and I had to chuckle at some of them. From claiming that America will be hurt if outsourcing is stopped to claims that America just doesn’t have the skills to meet the demands of the jobs that are being outsourced, there has been some interesting noise post the DNC.)

But there’s another aspect to this job loss for Americans that I want to discuss here.  That aspect is that of the H1B Visa and the cap on it.

Not only are jobs moving offshore to countries like India, there is a mass import of low cost labor into the US through the issuance of H1B visas (temporary work permits or visas). There are many who argue that H1B visas don’t create new jobs in the US and thus reduce jobs that would be offshored.

I for one don’t completely understand that argument.  When an H1B visa holder comes to the US, he or she is taking away a job that could go to a local worker. This creates increased competition for fewer available jobs and wage suppression due to H1B holders accepting jobs that are lower paying than what an average American would.  The H1B workers take lower paying jobs in the US because they still will make more than what they would make in their own countries.

Karen Dinkins of Detroit?s WWJ Radio - What were you thinking?

Inspite of a choice of hundreds of channels, I always listen to WWJ whenever I’m on the road and want to catch the news or weather or traffic report.  WWJ reporters like Roberta Jasena, Murrey Feldman, Sunny Eliot, John McElroy and at least another 10 are all dear friends of mine.  Well, actually their my friends when I’m in my car because I’ve listened to most of them for the past 24 years. (I know that they don’t even know that I exist - :) )

So when I caught a google alert just now about a Detroit reporter being fired over wearing an Obama Tshirt at a presidential rally, I hurried to check who it could be. I thought it would be some newbie reporter who was too green to know the rules that govern journalism.

I was dismayed to learn that it was Karen Dinkins who was fired, Karen whom I knew well. (Remember, she was also one of my car friends).

Karen was fired because she wore an Obama Tshirt while she, as a reporter, was covering a presidential rally.

Whoa there! Karen, what were you thinking?  Talk about a boo boo that is career changing!

Having been a reporter for 13 years with WWJ, you know perfectly well that reporters are not supposed to show any kind of bias towards any political candidate. Reporters have to be non-personal and completely objective.  By wearing an Obama Tshirt, you showed your “personal” opinion and that’s what got you fired.

I feel bad for Karen, after all, she’s my friend. But, but, she should have known better. I hope that she learned an important lesson from this experience and won’t ever make this mistake again.

I hope Karen Dinkins will land on her feet and find another job soon.
