Karen Dinkins of Detroit?s WWJ Radio - What were you thinking?
Inspite of
a choice of hundreds of channels, I always listen to WWJ whenever
I’m on the road and want to catch the news or weather or traffic
report. WWJ reporters like Roberta Jasena, Murrey Feldman, Sunny
Eliot, John McElroy and at least another 10 are all dear friends of
mine. Well, actually their my friends when I’m in my car because I’ve
listened to most of them for the past 24 years. (I know that they don’t
even know that I exist -
)
So when I caught a google alert just now about a Detroit reporter being fired over wearing an Obama Tshirt at a presidential rally, I hurried to check who it could be. I thought it would be some newbie reporter who was too green to know the rules that govern journalism.
I was dismayed to learn that it was Karen Dinkins who was fired,
Karen whom I knew well. (Remember, she was also one of
my car friends).
Karen was fired because she wore an Obama Tshirt while she, as a reporter, was covering a presidential rally.
Whoa there! Karen, what were you thinking? Talk about a boo boo that is career changing!
Having been a reporter for 13 years with WWJ, you know perfectly well
that reporters are not supposed to show any kind of bias towards any
political candidate. Reporters have to be non-personal and completely
objective. By wearing an Obama Tshirt, you showed your “personal”
opinion and that’s what got you fired.
I feel bad for Karen, after all, she’s my friend. But, but, she should
have known better. I hope that she learned an important lesson from
this experience and won’t ever make this mistake again.
I hope Karen Dinkins will land on her feet and find another job soon.
